Salt Air and What It Does Under Your Car

Salt does not attack the paint you can see nearly as fast as the metal you cannot. The fasteners go before the components do.

A car living within a few kilometres of the water in this region is in salt air continuously. Not occasionally, the way a car that visits the beach twice a year is. Every hour of every day.

Salt accelerates corrosion by making water a far better conductor, so electrochemical corrosion proceeds much faster than it would inland. It needs moisture to work, and this is not a dry place.

What surprises people is where the damage happens. Modern paint and galvanising protect visible bodywork well, and a coastal car can look excellent from three metres. Underneath is a different vehicle.

What goes, roughly in order

Fasteners. This is the important one and the least discussed. Bolts, nuts and studs holding suspension, exhaust and brake components on. A bolt that has been in salt air for six years does not undo, it shears, and a sheared bolt in a subframe or a suspension mounting point turns a two hour job into most of a day. This is why coastal cars cost more to repair, and it is a real quoting consideration rather than an excuse.

Brake lines and hoses. Steel lines corrode from the outside. A corroded brake line found on a hoist is a cheap repair. Found on the road it is a brake failure. This alone justifies periodic underbody inspection on a coastal car.

Caliper hardware. Slide pins seize, which drags a pad against the rotor and cooks it. The symptom is uneven pad wear and sometimes a wheel that is noticeably hotter than the others.

Exhaust hangers and the exhaust itself. Mostly an annoyance, occasionally a certificate failure.

Suspension components. Coil springs do break and corrosion is usually involved. Shock absorber bodies corrode, and the mountings more so.

Structural areas. Sills, subframe mounting points, boot floor, and the seams where water sits and does not drain. This is the one that decides whether a car has a future, and the difference between surface rust and structural rust is most of what a good inspection is for.

What actually helps

Rinse underneath. Fresh water, occasionally, and more so after launching a boat or driving on a beach. It is free, it takes minutes, and it is comfortably the highest value maintenance available to a coastal car. Salt that is not there cannot do anything.

Do not let debris sit. Leaves and grime in drain channels, sills and around the cowl hold moisture against metal permanently. Clearing them is worth more than it sounds.

Have the underbody looked at deliberately. Not just when something goes wrong. Corrosion caught while it is a wash-and-treat problem is a completely different proposition from corrosion caught when it has reached a mounting point.

Do related jobs together. If suspension work is being done on a car with corroded fasteners, doing an adjacent job at the same time saves paying for the difficult access twice.

The suspension and steering page covers the components most affected and how they are assessed.

Ask us about your car specifically

General advice only goes so far. Tell us the make, the kilometres and what it is doing, and you get an answer about your car rather than about cars, including whether the job is worth doing at all.

We cover
Cairns, the southern corridor to Gordonvale, and north to Trinity Beach
Vehicles
All makes, petrol and diesel, including 4WDs and work utes
  • Send the make, model, year and roughly what the odometer reads. Half of what decides a price is which service interval the car is up to, and none of that is guessable from the model alone.
  • Say what the car is doing and when it does it. A noise that only turns up cold is a different fault from one that only turns up hot, and that single detail regularly saves an hour on the hoist.
  • The number you approve is the number you pay. If the job turns out bigger once it is apart, the work stops and you get a call, rather than a larger invoice at the end.
