What people ask before they book
These are the questions that come up on the phone often enough to be worth writing down properly, mostly about why a car in this part of the country does not behave like the one the service schedule was written for. None of them is trying to sell you anything, and several of them end with the conclusion that you do not need to spend money.

What a Queensland Safety Certificate Actually Checks
The inspection has a defined scope. Knowing where it stops is as useful as knowing what it covers, particularly if you are the one buying.
If it turns out you do need it: safety certificates in cairns

How Often to Service a Car in Far North Queensland
The severe service schedule in the back of your handbook is not an upsell. Up here it is usually the one that applies, and it changes three things, not everything.
If it turns out you do need it: logbook servicing in cairns
-
Brake Fade on the Kuranda and Gillies Ranges
A pedal that goes long halfway down and feels perfectly normal at the bottom is not imagination. It is heat, and there are two different versions of it.
If it turns out you do need it: brake repairs in cairns

Why Car Air Conditioning Fails in the Build-Up
Air conditioning fails when it is asked to work hardest, which is why it always seems to go in October. The pattern of failure tells you the cause.
If it turns out you do need it: car air conditioning in cairns

Salt Air and What It Does Under Your Car
Salt does not attack the paint you can see nearly as fast as the metal you cannot. The fasteners go before the components do.
If it turns out you do need it: suspension and steering in cairns

DPF Problems on Short Trips
A diesel particulate filter needs sustained heat to empty itself. A vehicle doing eight kilometres at a time never gives it any.
If it turns out you do need it: diesel servicing in cairns

Logbook Servicing and Your New Car Warranty
A manufacturer cannot require you to use their dealership to keep your warranty. What they can require is that the job is done properly and recorded.
If it turns out you do need it: logbook servicing in cairns

Buying a Used Car in Cairns
Most used car advice is written for temperate cities. Two of the biggest risks up here, corrosion and flood history, barely feature in it.
If it turns out you do need it: pre-purchase inspections in cairns

Why Car Batteries Do Not Last Here
Cold weather is when a weak battery finally fails. Heat is what made it weak, and there is a lot of heat under a bonnet up here.
If it turns out you do need it: batteries and charging in cairns

Towing a Boat and Your Transmission
An automatic gets rid of its heat into the air around it. When that air is already 33 degrees and you have two tonnes on the back, the margin is thin.
If it turns out you do need it: clutch and transmission in cairns
Still not sure whether it needs doing?
Send the make, the kilometres and the symptom. We will look at it and tell you if it can wait, which is an answer we give more often than people expect.
- Workshop hours
- Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 5pm
- We cover
- Cairns, the southern corridor to Gordonvale, and north to Trinity Beach
- Vehicles
- All makes, petrol and diesel, including 4WDs and work utes
- Send the make, model, year and roughly what the odometer reads. Half of what decides a price is which service interval the car is up to, and none of that is guessable from the model alone.
- Say what the car is doing and when it does it. A noise that only turns up cold is a different fault from one that only turns up hot, and that single detail regularly saves an hour on the hoist.
- The number you approve is the number you pay. If the job turns out bigger once it is apart, the work stops and you get a call, rather than a larger invoice at the end.
