Logbook Servicing in Cairns
Your new car warranty does not require the dealer. It requires the schedule to be followed and the book to be stamped, and both happen here.
- Your manufacturer warranty stays intact
- Book stamped at every service
- Genuine or manufacturer-approved parts, your choice recorded
- The schedule adjusted for the conditions the car actually drives in
- Quoted before the work, with a call before anything is added
You do not have to go back to the dealer
This is the single most common misunderstanding in the trade, and it costs Cairns drivers a lot of money.
Under Australian Consumer Law, a manufacturer cannot make your new car warranty conditional on servicing at their own dealership. What they can require is that the car is serviced on schedule, by someone qualified, using parts that meet the manufacturer’s specification, and that the work is recorded. Do those things and the warranty stands.
That is exactly what a logbook service here is. The schedule for your make and model, the items that fall due at that interval, the correct oil grade and filter specification, and the book stamped and dated so there is a documented history when you need it.
If a dealer has told you otherwise, they were describing their preference rather than the law.
What we do at each interval
The schedule is set by your manufacturer, not by us, and it varies by make, engine and kilometres. Broadly, at each service the car gets:
- Engine oil and filter to the specified grade, which is not interchangeable on modern engines and is where a lot of cheap servicing quietly cuts corners.
- The items the logbook lists as due at that interval, whether that is fuel and air filters, spark plugs, coolant, or a transmission service.
- Brakes measured rather than glanced at, so you get remaining thickness as a number and can plan the replacement instead of being told it is urgent.
- All fluid levels and conditions checked, tyres and pressures, lights, wipers, belts and hoses.
- A road test, because a surprising number of faults only present when the car is moving and warm.
The part the schedule does not cover
A manufacturer’s interval is set against a temperate reference climate, and it assumes a duty cycle most cars here do not have. Almost every car in Cairns meets that same manufacturer’s own definition of severe service on several counts at once: sustained heat, coastal salt, dust, short trips and towing.
That does not mean everything needs doing twice as often. It means two or three specific things do, and the rest do not. In practice, on cars around here, that is usually brake fluid, coolant condition and transmission fluid. Brake fluid absorbs moisture out of the air, and wet fluid boils low, which is a real problem on a car that goes down the Kuranda or Gillies ranges with any regularity.
We will tell you which of those conditions apply to your car and which do not. A car doing highway kilometres between Gordonvale and the city has a different problem list from one doing four kilometres of school run at Bentley Park, and it is worth ten minutes on the phone to sort out which one you have. There is more on this in our note on how often to service a car in the tropics.
If we find something else
The logbook service is quoted before you bring the car in, and that number does not move on its own.
If something outside the schedule turns up, and on a car of any age it sometimes does, the work stops and you get a phone call with what it is, what it costs and whether it can wait. Plenty of the time the honest answer is that it can wait, and we would rather say so than add it to an invoice you did not expect.

Logbook Servicing in Cairns: the usual questions
How much is a service?
It depends on the make, the engine and which interval the car is up to, because the items that fall due at 40,000km are not the ones due at 10,000km. Ring with the make, model, year and kilometres and you get a real number for your car rather than a headline price that changes once the bonnet is up.
Will servicing here void my new car warranty?
No. Under Australian Consumer Law a manufacturer cannot require you to service at their own dealership to keep your warranty. What is required is that the car is serviced on schedule, by someone qualified, with parts meeting the manufacturer's specification, and that the work is recorded. All of that happens here, and your book is stamped.
How often should I service my car up here?
Start with the manufacturer's interval, then check whether your car meets that manufacturer's own definition of severe service. In Far North Queensland most do, on several counts at once. That usually means two or three specific items come forward, most often brake fluid, coolant and transmission fluid, rather than everything being done twice as often.
Get it booked
Tell us the make, model, year and kilometres and what the car is doing, and you get a real number for logbook servicing rather than a starting-from figure.
- Workshop hours
- Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 5pm
- We cover
- Cairns, the southern corridor to Gordonvale, and north to Trinity Beach
- Vehicles
- All makes, petrol and diesel, including 4WDs and work utes
- Send the make, model, year and roughly what the odometer reads. Half of what decides a price is which service interval the car is up to, and none of that is guessable from the model alone.
- Say what the car is doing and when it does it. A noise that only turns up cold is a different fault from one that only turns up hot, and that single detail regularly saves an hour on the hoist.
- The number you approve is the number you pay. If the job turns out bigger once it is apart, the work stops and you get a call, rather than a larger invoice at the end.
