Living this close to the water has a cost, and it is underneath

A car parked at Trinity Beach is in salt air every hour of every day, and salt does not attack the paint you can see nearly as fast as it attacks the metal you cannot.

What corrodes is the underbody: brake lines, caliper hardware and slide pins, exhaust hangers, suspension components and, most consequentially, every fastener holding those things on. A car here can look excellent at three metres and be significantly aged underneath.

Two things follow. First, the underbody is worth a deliberate look every couple of years rather than only when something goes wrong, because a corroded brake line found on a hoist is a cheap repair and a corroded brake line found on the road is not. Second, when work does need doing, expect it to take longer than the same job on an inland car. Bolts that have been in salt air for years shear rather than undo, and that is a genuine part of the quote rather than an excuse.

Boats, and what launching does to the tow vehicle

Plenty of vehicles here tow to the ramp, and reversing a vehicle down a ramp puts hot brakes into salt water.

The trailer’s own bearings are the well-known failure. Less discussed is what it does to the tow vehicle: rear brakes cooled suddenly in salt water, and an underbody salt bath applied at the moment everything is hottest and most receptive to it. Rinsing afterwards matters more here than anywhere.

Towing also changes the servicing conversation generally. Sustained load means more heat into the transmission and harder work for the cooling system, so if your vehicle tows, that is worth saying when you book rather than leaving us to find out from the towbar.

Cars that sit

The other Trinity Beach pattern is vehicles that go unused for weeks at a time: holiday houses, people who work away, second cars.

Sitting is not restful for a car. Batteries self-discharge and modern vehicles draw a small current continuously even switched off, so a car left three weeks can be flat, and repeated deep discharges shorten a battery’s life permanently. In this climate, where heat already limits a battery to three or four years rather than six, that adds up fast. That is covered on the batteries and charging page.

Brake rotors develop surface rust overnight here and heavier corrosion over weeks, which produces a car that stops with a shudder for the first few applications. Usually that cleans up. Sometimes it has gone far enough to need machining.

Tyres develop flat spots and perish faster in UV and heat than they wear out. And a car that sits is where rodent damage to wiring turns up, which is a real and reasonably common finding around here.
