Salt is the whole story here

Portsmith is the industrial and marine end of Cairns, sitting on the inlet, and vehicles based here get more salt exposure than almost anywhere else in the city that is not actually on the beach.

Salt does its damage from underneath, where nobody looks. What suffers is not usually the big visible components, it is the things attached to them: brake lines, caliper slide pins, exhaust hangers, suspension fasteners, and the bolts holding all of it together.

The practical consequence catches people out. A job that is straightforward on an inland car becomes a much longer one on a Portsmith car, because a bolt that has been in salt air for six years does not undo, it shears. A sheared fastener in a subframe or a suspension mounting point is a real amount of extra work, and it is the difference between a two hour job and most of a day.

We would rather raise that when quoting than surprise you with it afterwards. Where a vehicle has that kind of corrosion, it is often worth doing two related jobs together while the area is apart, because the second one on its own later will cost considerably more.

Boat trailers and what launching does

A lot of what moves through here tows, and a tow vehicle that reverses down a ramp is doing something specific to itself.

Immersing hot brakes in salt water is hard on rotors, calipers and the hardware. Wheel bearings on the trailer itself are the classic failure, but the tow vehicle’s rear brakes take a beating too, and the underbody gets a salt bath at exactly the point where it is hottest and most able to absorb it.

If you launch regularly, a fresh water rinse underneath afterwards is genuinely the highest value thing you can do, and it costs nothing. Beyond that it is worth having the brakes and underbody looked at deliberately rather than waiting for an inspection to find something.

Water crossings and diff breathers

Differentials and transfer cases are vented so the air inside can expand as they heat up. Drive a hot diff into cool water and the air contracts fast, and the vacuum pulls water in through the breather. The oil comes out looking like milky coffee, and bearings fail over the following weeks rather than immediately, so the connection to the crossing gets missed.
