Older housing, older cars. The useful question on a car with age on it is not what could be done, it is what is worth doing, and in what order.
Older cars deserve a different conversation
Manunda is one of the older parts of Cairns, and the vehicle mix follows the housing. Plenty of cars here have real age on them, are outside any warranty, and are worth a good deal less than the sum of what could be done to them.
That changes what useful advice looks like. On a three year old car under warranty the job is to follow the schedule. On a fifteen year old car the job is to work out what is worth spending, in what order, and where the line is.
So the report you get on a car like that is deliberately split. What is a safety item and is not negotiable. What will strand you if it is left. What is wear that can be watched. And, occasionally, the honest conclusion that a particular repair costs more than the car is worth and you should think carefully before authorising it.
That last one is a conversation worth having before the work starts rather than after, and it is the reason nothing here gets done without a quote and an approval.
What actually goes on cars of this age here
Some of it is age, and some of it is this specific climate acting on age.
Batteries. Heat is what kills batteries, not cold, and under-bonnet temperatures here shorten their life to three or four years rather than six. On an older car a weak battery is also more likely to be a symptom of a charging fault or a parasitic drain, so it is worth testing the system rather than just fitting another one.
Cooling systems. Radiators, hoses and thermostats all have a life, and an overheat on an older engine can turn a cheap problem into a head gasket. Coolant condition is genuinely worth checking on anything with years on it.
Rubber generally. Belts, hoses, suspension bushes and engine mounts perish with heat and time regardless of kilometres, which is why a low-kilometre older car is often in worse shape than the odometer suggests.
Corrosion. Cars that have spent fifteen years in this air have surface rust nearly everywhere and, sometimes, structural rust where it matters. The difference between those two is most of what decides whether a car has a future.
Selling it
A lot of the cars around here eventually get sold privately, and that means a safety certificate.
Worth knowing before you book one: the certificate is a statutory safety inspection with a fixed scope, and on an older car the things that most often fail are cheap or structural, with not much in between. The cheap ones are a blown number plate light, a wiper blade torn by the sun, a windscreen chip that has spread into the wiped area, tyres that are legal on tread but cracked in the sidewall. The structural one is rust, and that is the one worth knowing about before you have committed to selling.
If you are thinking of selling and are not sure how the car will go, say so when you ring. It is usually cheaper to find out what needs attention first than to pay for an inspection twice.

- Send the make, model, year and roughly what the odometer reads. Half of what decides a price is which service interval the car is up to, and none of that is guessable from the model alone.
- Say what the car is doing and when it does it. A noise that only turns up cold is a different fault from one that only turns up hot, and that single detail regularly saves an hour on the hoist.
- The number you approve is the number you pay. If the job turns out bigger once it is apart, the work stops and you get a call, rather than a larger invoice at the end.
