Heat is what kills gearboxes here

An automatic transmission is, more than anything else, a heat management problem. It makes heat by design, through a torque converter that works by moving fluid around, and it gets rid of that heat into the air through a cooler.

When the air it is dumping heat into starts at 33 degrees rather than 18, the whole system runs closer to its ceiling before anything unusual has happened at all. Then add what transmissions here are actually asked to do: stop-start traffic on Mulgrave Road, a climb up a range, or a two tonne boat on the back in February.

Transmission fluid degrades with heat, and once it has degraded it stops protecting and stops cooling properly, which makes more heat. That is the loop that ends in a rebuild, and it is why we treat fluid condition as a real diagnostic rather than a line item.

Some manufacturers describe their transmission fluid as filled for life. In this climate, on a vehicle that tows, that is worth a conversation. The life it refers to is not necessarily the life you were hoping to get out of the car. There is more in our note on towing and your transmission.

Automatic servicing

What we do depends on the transmission, because they are not all the same and some of them are particular about it.

Fluid condition and level first, checked at the right temperature, which matters more than most people realise: many modern transmissions can only be checked accurately within a narrow temperature window and reading them cold gives a meaningless answer.

Then, where it is appropriate, a drain and fill or a full fluid exchange with the correct specification fluid, a filter or pan service where the design allows one, and a scan for stored transmission fault codes. Fluid specification is not a place to substitute. The wrong fluid in a modern automatic causes shift quality problems that look exactly like mechanical failure.

Clutches

A clutch that is slipping usually announces itself the same way: engine revs climb but the car does not accelerate to match, worst under load, worst going uphill. A clutch that is dragging or not releasing is a different fault and often a hydraulic one.

That distinction matters financially, because a master or slave cylinder is a fraction of the cost of a clutch, and the symptoms overlap enough to be worth checking properly before anyone quotes you a gearbox-out job. We diagnose first.

Where the clutch does need replacing, the job is done as a set: clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing together, with the flywheel machined or replaced as its condition requires. Reusing a worn release bearing to save a small amount is how a clutch job gets done twice, and the labour is the expensive half.

Vehicles that tow, carry weight, or spend a lot of time in stop-start traffic go through clutches faster. That is not a defect and it is not driving badly, it is duty.

When we would tell you not to

A gearbox rebuild on a car worth less than the rebuild is not a repair, it is a decision, and it should be presented as one.

If we get to that point you will get the actual numbers: what the repair costs, what the car is worth with it done, and what else on the vehicle is close to needing attention. Some people will spend it anyway because they know the car and would rather keep it, and that is a perfectly good reason. But it should be a choice made with the figures in front of you rather than after the gearbox is already out.

All makes, petrol and diesel, including 4WDs and work utes
  • Send the make, model, year and roughly what the odometer reads. Half of what decides a price is which service interval the car is up to, and none of that is guessable from the model alone.
  • Say what the car is doing and when it does it. A noise that only turns up cold is a different fault from one that only turns up hot, and that single detail regularly saves an hour on the hoist.
  • The number you approve is the number you pay. If the job turns out bigger once it is apart, the work stops and you get a call, rather than a larger invoice at the end.
