Pre-Purchase Inspections in Cairns

Different question from a safety certificate

If you are buying a used car, the seller’s safety certificate is not the check you want, and this is worth being clear about because the two get conflated constantly.

A safety certificate is a statutory inspection with a fixed scope. It says the vehicle met a minimum safety standard on the day it was looked at. It says nothing about the engine, the transmission, the clutch, the air conditioning or the electronics, because none of those are in scope. A car can hold a valid certificate and still need four thousand dollars of work.

A pre-purchase inspection has no fixed scope, because it is answering a different question: what is this car going to cost me, and is the asking price sensible given that?

What gets looked at

Mechanical condition first. Engine condition and how it runs from cold, which is why we would rather it arrives cold. Transmission behaviour, clutch, oil and coolant condition, and any leaks and where they are actually coming from as opposed to where they have dripped to.

The electronics get scanned, including stored and pending fault codes and the history of anything that has been cleared. A recently cleared fault memory on a car being sold is itself a finding.

Then the parts that decide the price: brakes and tyres measured, suspension checked for play, belts and hoses, battery and charging, and the air conditioning tested for actual vent temperature rather than whether it blows cold-ish.

The two things that matter most on a Cairns car

Corrosion. This is the one that separates a local inspection from a generic checklist. Cars in this region age from underneath, and the ones that have lived near the water can be structurally compromised while looking excellent from three metres away. Sills, subframe and suspension mounting points, boot floor, the seams where water sits. Surface rust is cosmetic and common. Structural rust is a reason to walk away, and telling the difference is most of the value here.

Flood history. Not every car, but it is a real risk in this part of the country and the signs are findable if someone is looking: silt in places it should not be, corrosion on connectors and under carpet, mismatched or recently replaced interior trim, moisture in lights, and a wiring loom that has been disturbed. A flooded car is a lifetime of electrical faults and it is very often not disclosed.

We also look at the wear pattern and whether it matches the story. A car with low kilometres and a worn pedal rubber and steering wheel is telling you something.

What you get

A written report, in plain language, split into three lists: what needs doing now, what will need doing within a year or so, and what is cosmetic or can be left. Where it is useful you get rough costs, so you can turn the report into a negotiating position or a reason to keep looking.

If the car is not worth buying, we will say so directly. That is the single most useful outcome an inspection can produce and it is the reason to have one done.

Practical notes

Book it before you commit, and make the sale conditional on it. Sellers who refuse an inspection are telling you something for free.

We would rather see the car cold, because a lot of faults, particularly on start-up, only present that way. Dealers and private sellers will often warm a car before you arrive without meaning anything by it.
